Notions #2 – Gender Fluid Jesus

Some notions, every week. Here are some:

Jesus Is Bored with Your Gender Binary

A dear friend of mine who is Christian (in a magicalstrange way), intersex, and queer as all fuck pointed out an interesting Bible verse to me. Galatians 3:28, which reads:

There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus

Many traditional Christians argue that this verse show how Jesus eliminated the categories ‘slave’ and ‘free’. By that logic, it seems Jesus also abolished ‘male’ and ‘female’…

I eagerly await the Pope’s public announcements outlining his fluid views of gender!

Creepy Racism in Dumbo

I watched Dumbo with my daughter recently, for the first time in years. I was really shocked by the dark stuff in this movie, most of which I hadn’t noticed before.

Of course, there’s the vocal blackface and blatant stereotypes of the talking crows. But it’s the portrayal of black humans in Dumbo that is really distressing. Not only do none of them have speaking roles, but they are faceless. Literally, they have no faces! The animals get faces, but not black people!

These faceless men work alongside the animals to set up the circus while singing the following song:

We work all day, we work all night

We never learned to read or write

We’re happy-hearted roustabouts

When other folks have gone to bed

We slave until we’re almost dead

We’re happy-hearted roustabouts”

We slave until we’re almost dead; we’re happy.

Fuck, Disney. Just. Fuck.

    1. Hi kinchski and Nicola,

Unfortunately, the situations and ramifications are far worse than what can be gleaned from some Disney movies and franchises, many of which perpetuate certain values and stereotypes to the detriment of cultivating holistic worldviews, and to the exclusion of reaching deeper understandings and narratives. You are very welcome to read about these issues in my special post at

Happy April to all of you!

      1. Hi kinchski,

I tried to submit a couple of comments just a few minutes ago to your other post entitled “Notions #4 – Meeting Death with Curiosity”, and somehow they disappeared.
Please kindly fix the problem. Thanks.
